The Who Crew Review: The Sound Of Drums

Name: Emma Jane Shepherd | Age: 34

After last week’s superb episode could the tension be kept up and the standard of the script retained?  Yes absolutely.

This week’s episode has incredibly tense and dark undercurrents.  It was always  going to be bad news that the Master was back and this has not disappointed.

In this episode we see that the Master has become Prime Minister “Harold Saxon” and on his first day in office he promptly kills his cabinet.    He is able to do this because he seems to have total control over the British population but how – it transpires that the drumming in his head is actually a code being tapped out to the public.  He used this prior to the election to infiltrate the public’s subconscious and spread the message to vote for him.

The Doctor, Martha and Jack are hot on his trail however, as is a journalist who uncovers part of the truth and this costs her her life.

Martha’s family are also in danger in this episode.  Mum thinks she is helping to get Martha back but Saxon is using her and the family to track down the Doctor and co.,   The Doctor etc., are then treated as high profile terrorist suspects.

The Master in the meantime talks of making first contact with extra terrestrial life and that they come in peace.   The world waits for this extraordinary moment but it quickly turns to tragedy as it transpires it is an invasion masterminded by the Master.  The Doctor and Master fight and it looks as if the Doctor may have met his match tonight as the Master has blasted the Doctor’s DNA and aged him rapidly.

The world is on the brink of destruction with the episode leaving Martha overseeing a scene of destruction on an apocalyptic scale.

The script was just phenomenal tonight with the tension absolutely palpable.  It drew in other storylines i.e., the Lazurus storyline and it transpires that there have been many interwoven plots leading to this finale.

There was a huge amount of humour in the script as well with everything from slapstick humour to political satire.   Also all the banter between Martha, Jack and the Doctor and the Doctor and the Master was wonderfully written.   The script tonight was such a great combination of humour and menace.   Russell T. Davies is just the most incredibly talented writer.  I especially loved the Master eating jelly babies – very Tom Baker’s Doctor!

Also the make-up used to age David Tennant was just superb and the special effects and artistry used in creating the images of Gallifrey were knockout.

The acting from everyone was just wonderful tonight from David Tennant, John Barrowman, Freema Agyeman and John Simm who is just wonderful is this particular incarnation of the Master.

Next week’s finale should be magnificent and it looks as if it is going to Martha that saves the day – here’s to Girl Power!!

Wow- once again another fantastic episode, but I reckon it tops them all!!!
It was great to see everything come together from over the series. I longed for the appearance of Mr Saxon and the Master, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Even though I don’t know the history of the Master, I was thrilled to find out that the Doctor’s Arch nemesis was to appear at the end of the series.

A real difficulty for the Doctor; who in real desperation, seems to be
defeated by his own race. A threat: that’s a friend. He’s just found out he’s not alone and he finds out it’s the Master. The poor Doctor begs over the phone and although there is a definite bond between them and the Master considers what the Doctor has to say, he’s just to crazed to accept it. I loved that scene where the Master and the Doctor talk over the phone; it shows them as equals and both in desperation.

The master, a man with the same wit and charm as the Doctor but evil. I hate to say it but Mr Saxon would get my vote!!! I found myself drumming my fingers at the table- very catchy. I don’t want to see him defeated, he’s such an amazing character, I’d like to see him as a regular villain like the Daleks, a villain who always escapes and turns up randomly with some evil plan.  He should just disappear like Dalek Cann, the Doctor knowing that they will meet again.

I hated to see the Doctor, Captain Jack and Martha just sat there helpless; it seems strange for the Doctor to be in hiding when he’s usually very open.
Even the Doctor’s brilliant invention couldn’t save him from the unstoppable force that was the Master. Wasn’t John Simm fantastic, he brings so much energy to the character, so much cheek, a sincere charm and a child like quality.

The scene of Galifrey and the Master and Doctor’s upbringing was
astonishing. I liked how they made it so mythical and ancient, because the Doctor seems so human; I think they needed Galifrey to be abnormal and totally unimaginable. We need to understand that he’s an alien. I thought the story of the Timelords was beautiful, it’s another peep into the great minds of the Timelords; one step closer to understanding the Doctor. Doesn’t David Tennant make it seem so real though? Mind you I think David Tennant might lose some female fans if he doesn’t become his old youthful self again soon!!!

The production was great, again. Martha’s driving rocked and the explosion at the flat was cool. Well, it’s a strange feeling this week, I can’t wait for the next episode but I don’t want the series to finish and wait till, oh no… CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!

At the end of last week’s episode, everything seemed hopeless – Professor Yana was revealed as the Master, he then regenerated into a younger form and made off with the TARDIS, leaving the Doctor, Martha and Jack stranded in the far future with the Futurekind baying for their blood.  Fortunately, they still had Jack’s Time Agent’s Vortex Manipulator (once the Doctor had had fixed it with the sonic screwdriver), and after a bumpy ride, they returned to 2007, only to discover, to their horror, that the Master (in the guise of Harold Saxon) is now the British Prime Minister.  Saxon announces that he has made contact with a ‘friendly’ race of aliens called the Toclafane, and that they will be arriving on Earth tomorrow.  However, the Doctor knows that no such race exists – now he must discover their real identity and unmask the Master before it’s too late.

As with ‘Torchwood’ last year, the name ‘Mr Saxon’ has been a thread running throughout the series – he has been mentioned in several episodes, most notably in ‘The Runaway Bride’ (when he gave the order to open fire on the Empress of the Racnoss’ ship), and in ‘The Lazarus Experiment’ (as the chief investor in the Professor’s work).  Finally, his true identity is revealed.  Of course, this is not the first time that the Doctor and the Master have faced each other – the character has been played by several different actors over the years, of which John Simm is the sixth (‘Mr. Saxon’ is an anagram of ‘Master No. Six’).  However, unlike his previous incarnations, this Master has a wife, which the Doctor is quite surprised about.  When he was first introduced, the Master’s main power was to hypnotise his victims (“I am the Master, and you will obey me. ”), and later, to shrink them to doll-size using the Tissue Compression Eliminator (TCE), which resembled the Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, although the Master now has a larger, laser screwdriver instead.  Initially, his main aim was to take control of the universe (and to live longer than his 13 regenerations), but later, this also included defeating the Doctor.  It was always clear that the Doctor and the Master had known each other on Gallifrey, and this was confirmed when the Doctor said that they had attended the academy together and fought alongside each other in the Time War. However, the Master didn’t seem to know that Gallifrey had been destroyed, and that he and the Doctor were the only Time Lords left.

The Master’s hypnotic powers have continued into this incarnation, although he has now found a more ingenious way of influencing the population – by transmitting “the sound of drums”, which he constantly hears in his head, as a pulsating signal via mobile phones.  Mr Saxon has only existed for around 18 months, and at the same time, a mobile phone network known as ‘Archangel’ has been created, which is not only transmitting the signal, but is also able to track people’s whereabouts.  The Doctor realises that the signal is saying “vote Saxon – believe in me” – Martha told the Doctor to believe in her when she put him inside the stasis chamber in ‘42’, and when she starts drumming the same rhythm, the Doctor realises that she has been hypnotised like everyone else, and it was the signal that stopped him from realising that there was another Time Lord out there.  This is not the first time that the populace has been controlled by mobile phones, as this method was also used by John Lumic in ‘Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel’ last year, but the Master seems to be doing it in a more subtle way than before.  There is also the question of the drumming – the Master hears it constantly, and asks everyone if they can hear it, but he is the only one that can.  Does the drumming exist at all, or is the Master mad?  The drumbeats are clearly the same as those used in the theme tune, but we don’t know what they were originally intended to represent – perhaps the Doctor’s dual heartbeats – but the Master refers to them as the sound of impending war.

At the start of the episode, the Doctor was surprised that the Master had a wife.  We saw very little of Lucy Saxon during this episode, and know even less about her than we do about her husband, but I’m wondering whether she may be more involved in the Master’s plans than we realise.  The most telling scene was when Vivienne Rook was trying to interview Mrs Saxon, who said “he was so good to my father… but I made my choice, for better or for worse.”  Mr Saxon then refers to her as “my faithful companion”, which seems a slightly unusual way for a husband to refer to his wife.  Interestingly, Rose told the Doctor that she had made her choice when she returned to him in ‘Doomsday’, and he in turn would probably refer to both Rose and Martha as faithful companions.  Towards the end of the episode, it becomes evident that Mrs Saxon may well be just as disturbed as her husband – in the final scene, she seems to be enjoying the suffering he’s inflicting (perhaps a bit too much), not to mention her crazy dancing to ‘Voodoo Child’ and her almost childlike wonder whilst watching the billions of Toclafane streaming towards Earth, with no regard for the destruction to follow.  She reminded me slightly of Lady Macbeth, and I’m also wondering whether it may turn out that she is actually in charge, rather than the Master.  It did also occur to me that she may be one of the Toclafane, albeit in human form, and that the Master had married her as some sort of cosmic alliance with the Toclafane race (her father being their leader).

If the Saxons are mysterious, then the Toclafane are even more so – they don’t appear to be a monster that the Doctor has ever encountered before, and more worryingly, they don’t appear to exist at all, as the Doctor declares that ‘Toclafane’ is a made-up name, one used on Gallifrey to refer to the ‘bogeyman’ or some other imaginary threat.  They look very much like the void ship from ‘Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday’, and they sprout blades when they’re about to attack, even though they then kill their victims using laser guns.  They speak in childlike voices, and will only take orders from the Master (who actually calls them “kids” at one point, but whether this means that they are his own is unclear).  We don’t yet know if, like the void ship, there are creatures inside the spheres, but the trailer for next week’s episode showed Martha looking inside one, and when the Doctor asked the Master who they were, he replied “if I told you the truth, your hearts would break”.  This may mean that they are connected to the Time Lords in some way.  However, the two previous series finales featured the Daleks, and even though they have already appeared this series, we know that the last one managed to escape, so is it possible that they could be Daleks who have taken on a new form?  Obviously the Master is the Doctor’s main enemy, but I’m sure that we will see the full extent of the Toclafane’s powers next week.

The Master still has control of the TARDIS, and after arriving back on Earth, has hidden it within the Valiant, an aircraft carrier for the skies.  However, once the Doctor finds it, he discovers that the Master has “cannibalised” it and installed a “paradox machine”, which he is unable to remove until he knows what the Master’s plans are.  The Toclafane need the TARDIS, as they ask the Master whether it is ready, to which he replies that it “reaches critical at 8:02am”, which is the time that the needle on the paradox machine will go into the red zone.  The Toclafane then tell the Master that they need to “escape the darkness and terrible cold” – perhaps this means that they need to colonise our world because their own is destroyed, or no longer exists, which again suggests that they may be connected to the Time Lords in some way, since Gallifrey was destroyed.  However, the Time Lords are a peaceful race, which observes the other planets, so it seems unlikely that they would suddenly become war-mongers.  As the billions of Toclafane rain down on the Earth, Mr Saxon asks his wife whether they should “decimate” the population, and then instructs the Toclafane to kill one tenth of them.  Since the dictionary definition of ‘decimate’ is “to kill or remove one in every ten”, it seems strange that he would need to repeat himself.  ‘Decimate’ sounds very similar to ‘exterminate’, of course, but the dictionary notes that the word should not be used in this sense, and that it should not be used to mean “defeat utterly”.  Since the Doctor is now in his tenth incarnation, it has been speculated that this is why the Master used this word (and why he wants a tenth of them), but we don’t yet know whether they are to be killed or enslaved.

The Doctor, Martha and Jack are all in very different places, metaphorically speaking.  The Doctor, clearly feeling obligated towards the Master because he is a fellow Time Lord, is trying to save him rather than destroy him.  His normal policy is one of “no second chances”, but this doesn’t seem to apply to the Master, although I don’t think the Doctor has revealed everything about their shared history.  Considering the brutality of the punishments he meted out to the Family of Blood, it’s quite a surprise that he hasn’t done the same here.  Martha is also personally involved, now that her family (with the exception of Leo) have been captured.  For the first time this series, her (ironically) rose-tinted glasses where the Doctor is concerned have slipped, and she blames him for her family’s predicament.  However, it later transpires that both she and Jack have unrequited feelings for the Doctor (although in Jack’s case, these probably began with the Ninth Doctor).  Jack, meanwhile, although now very much part of the team, does not have the emotional involvement that the Doctor and Martha have.  However, he is able to put his Torchwood training to good use, although the Doctor is initially angry that Jack is working for them, but Jack declares that he has completely reorganised them in the Doctor’s honour (another sign of his feelings for him).

In terms of performances, John Simm virtually stole the show as the Master, although I felt that whilst he was incredibly menacing at times (notably during the mobile phone conversation with the Doctor), there were times when he went slightly over-the-top – the scenes where he was demonstrating to the Cabinet whether something was funny or not, and his behaviour during the final scene on board the ‘Valiant’, seemed to be veering past madness and seemed very unlikely, particularly if he didn’t want to arouse suspicion.  Although I haven’t seen the Master’s previous incarnations, from what I can gather he was always played as a very imposing and menacing figure, certainly not with any humorous touches, although these may now have been added to reflect his growing insanity.  David’s performance was subdued this week, but was much more effective at conveying the approaching menace – the highlight being the previously-mentioned phone conversation with the Master, although I couldn’t help thinking that this could have been even better if done in person (like his confrontation of Mr Finch by the swimming pool in ‘School Reunion’).  However, as in ‘Utopia’, we once again felt the Doctor’s despair that he couldn’t persuade the Master to stop, and the sight of the Doctor, aged by 100 years (thanks to some more amazing prosthetics) and completely helpless, was more disturbing than the swarms of Toclafane heading for Earth.  Meanwhile, Martha’s anger at the Master, and Freema’s resulting performance, was brilliant – the Doctor, Jack, and her family all looked to her for help before she teleported away, and I’m eagerly awaiting her plan to rescue them.  As for Jack, this was probably my favourite performance of John Barrowman’s to date, and hopefully Jack will continue like this in the next series of ‘Torchwood’.

And now, for the final episode – and all bets are off!  The fate of the Earth rests on Martha’s shoulders, but with no Doctor, no Jack, and no TARDIS, what is she going to do?  This is going to be a very long week….

'The sound of drums; is the second part to Utopia. The Mysterious Mr. Saxon has now become Prime minister and is bringing an Alien species to our Planet.
Wow a 3 parted episode! The only thing worse than having to wait for the 2nd part finale is having to wait for a 3rd part finale.. Then waiting for a 4 part.. Anyway although its a 3 parted episode the 2nd part is a very exciting part to the storyline and if you missed it but saw the 1st part then skipped to the 3rd part you would probably not know what was happening.
Also I cannot beleive how fast this series has gone! To me it doesn't seem 5 minutes since we were waiting to watch Smith & Jones to be on TV & now we are waiting to see the final episode!
I conclude that this is a vital part of the storyline to watch if you want to know what is happening in part 3.

Left on last week's cliffhanger, we saw the return of the Master, who stole the Doctor's TARDIS while the Future Kind were chasing the time-travelling three. 'The Sound of Drums' is the second part of Russell T Davies' gripping end story for this series. So how do the trio get back to the 21st century?

Well, the Doctor fixes Jack's Vortex Manipulator and the three of them are transported to London 4 days after Martha met the Doctor. Martha realises who Harry Saxon, Prime Minister of Britain, really is, the Master. So the three of them chill at Martha's thinking of a plan when Mr Saxon appears on TV. “In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that what this country needs, right now, is a Doctor”. Then his speech continues “And oh, I don't know, every medical student”. The Doctor becomes suddenly alarmed and finds a bomb strapped to the back of Martha's TV and there is a rush to get out.

The Master has Tish, Martha's sister  (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) working at Downing Street so she is easy to find when Mr Power Freak decides to arrest the Jones family as are her mother, Francine (Adjoa Andoh) and father, Clive (Trevor Laird). But just to upset Mr Power Mad, Leo (Reggie Yates) Martha's brother is in Brighton. So the Doctor, Jack and Martha go on the run, in a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

The Doctor then figures out how the Master has cloaked himself the past 18 months on Earth and how he wasn't noticed by the Doctor. And uses this on three TARDIS keys that they wear, so people won't notice them unless they draw attention to themselves.

Will they rescue Martha's family? Who are the Toclafane? What is the Master up to? What are the drums?

The episode features the acting talents of Alexandra Moen, Elize du Toit, Nichola McAuliffe, Nicholas Gecks, Colin Stinton, Olivia Hill, Daniel Ming, Lachele Car, Sharon Osbourne, McFly and Ann Widdecombe.

Got to start by saying John Sim plays the master very well, I thought
he didn't really look like the other masters and didn't think he would be
good, but he gave a different look to the master, proberly even scarier. The master was really funny though and he brought back the jelly babies yey. But by the end he was really scary. This episode was good I found it very different and cool where jack, the doctor and martha were on the run. I give this episode 8 out of 10.

The last few episodes being a 3 parter means more cliffhangers, which I love but hate. The tapping on the cup tells the doctor as it did to me that it would be a constant theme, and when the master says ‘what this country really needs, right now, is a doctor.’ Well that’s just really mean isn’t it! But doctor who is so clever in how it has all of the links in time how Martha knew about Mr Saxon before he met him before she met him in her future but in the master’s past. And how he was there all along.
When I first saw Tish working for Harold I though she is always working for the relevent people at the right time, and that’s just how it’s been written, but knowing doctor who there was a deeper story line to it.
The Master has a really insane felling about him, he is totaly bonkers, throwing his papers up in the air, his this is funny and this isn’t faces that he pulls at Albert, and the thumbs up when he reminded that he is insane when he’s gasses out the cabinate.
I though it was really good to include some celebrities and Mc Fly, because it made it fell more real.
It was good that Harriet Jones was mentioned because I was wondering what had happened to her, and it’s good how all the series do still link in. I felt sorry for Viven when she was trying to help Lucy, and her fete is unfortunate.
Harold opens the door, we hear the scream, closes it, the scream stops ect, which just adds more ot h is insane chrachter, which makes him sacry. It’s also more scary because he’s the doctor’s equal.
I also really like it when Harry was doing the new report and flash backs of Big Ben, ghosts, cybermen and the star at christmas were mentioned beacsue I did wonder if the past events had just been forgoten.
We heard the sound of drums again when martha was taping it, so really Mr saxon has lured everyone into his trap.
Martha’s house exploding was one of my favorite parts, because the music was brilliant. Martha telling the doctor she’ll do what she likes is stupid because the doctor has been wrong before but I would trust him and do whatever he said. Martha’s mum was really stupid to go along with the plan to get the doctor, and although Clive got arrested, I think it was brilliant that he was firm an didn’t lie to his daughter. And Martha’s stunt driving was brilliant, I’d have loved to do it. It was such a contrast seeing th Jones’ being arrested, then seeing Leo walking along Brighton Pier. Lucky for him, although I’d love to be in the middle of danger.
Martha seemed to get very cross with the Doctor yelling at him saying that it was all his fault, which is not fair, how’s it the doctor’s fault, Martha’s the one that wanted to travel with him.
Ducring the phone call between the master and the doctor I reall yhtought he might give in as they were the only time lords left and they were talking about Galifrey and how it’s gone.
Seeing the master seeing the teletubbies was fantastic ( like when one of the old masters saw the clangers) and how that is maybe one of the only things that he doesn’t understand.
Acctualy seeing Galifrey was amazing, it looked so beautiful, and it must be horrible to have memories of it but for it not to exist.
The doctor seems disgusted when Captin Jack says her was part of TORCHWOOD, and you could see it in his face. Maybe it’s because Toorchwood was the result of Rose leaving. Ohhh I really miss Rose !!! Anyway the Tardis keys making you un-noticed were clever, as was the doctor’s explaination, ‘ it’s link when you fancy someone and they don’t even know you exist’ and Jack’s line to martha ‘You too hu!’ Sorry guys, but Rose got there first.
In the next scene I recognised the UNIT music from my CD, although it could hear the tune but could work out what it was then it click and I said it’s UNIT , then the next lines were ‘from now on UNIT has control’. Harold zipping and Unzping his mouth is so child like. But his so horrible as the Jones’ come out of the van and he teases them, and pulls faces at them.
It was so so so sad when they found the TARDIS but it was all glowing red and sounded horrible and was destroyed. It really was so sad. You don’t realise how much you love the TARDIS until something like that happens. The doctor must have been heart broken. Harold offering a jelly baby to lucy was just like the 4th Doctor used to do, which was brilliant script writing from Russel T Davies. Something for the older viewers.
It’s not fair, the master can’t have a bigger screwdrive than the doctor, sonic is so much better. Although lazer might be bigger it’s not better. It turned the Doctor into and old man again! The second time this series. DAVID TENNANT/THE DOCTOR IS THE SEXYIEST THING EVER, WHY CAN’T HE BE LEFT YOUNG. I still love him too bits, matter how old he is or looks.
Harold says to the doctor if he told him what he was doing it would break his hearts. But what was it?! I could tell the episode was coming to an end because ends were becoming unties. I loved the music Here come the drums. I’ve listened to it over and over again. Inocent Lucy dances away to the music was quite chilling you think she’s so inocent be she dance away as though all these people dying is a joke. It must be so hard for Martha because it’s all down to her and seeingthe earth being ripped to pieces was horrible. At each series finale I say that it can’t get worse that this but every year, it looks asthough humans are doomed even more. I hate the master’s guts. He is so horrible to the lovely doctor. I also think that it has been over done with the doctor being helpless like in 42 nad human Nature and family of blood. It does work but I think it has been over done because it’s the doctor who should save the day, and I think it should be doctor Vs master. But it was great and the week is going to go so slowly but I don’t want the series to end (mind you it’s only half a year till christmas)

10/10 again, series finales are always great!!!

I know I keep saying this, but this weeks episode has to be my favourite. It was just one of those episodes that had me hooked right from the beginning. Everything individually was perfect, and came together to make, in my opinion, one of the finest pieces of television I have seen all year. You heard me right people... all year! And I'm a teenager so that's a lot of hours of TV.

Lets start by commenting on the fantastic John Simm's portrayal of The Master. It was very convincing, and quite disturbing. Throughout the episode you could tell that he was 100% committed to the role. His performance was spot on; being both amusing and sinister at the same time. It's a very interesting character, in that he is very similar to the Doctor but really they are complete opposites when it comes to fundemental issues such as right and wrong. I liked how the script allowed the Master to have one liners, that were very much like the Doctor's sense of humour. It reminded us that he was actually intellectually and physically equal to the Doctor.

RTD's script for this episode was very well written. I didn't actually think it was one of his episodes at the beginning until the phone conversation between the Master and Doctor, then I knew...( "Are you asking me on a date?") There wasn't that many really funny moments in this episode, which was good because that would have completely ruined it . I really admire Russel's ability to find the right balance of comedy and serious drama in the whole series. He just seems to get it just right everytime. The story this week was much easier to follow, even though it was so fast paced, which was a good thing. The perception filter Tardis Keys were a rather snazzy invention.

The use of flashbacks was once again very useful to the audience, answering questions like how the trio got back from the end of the universe and so forth. One of my favourite scenes this week was when the Doctor reminisced about Gallifrey and the way it was, it was truly beautiful. Oh and it was inevitable that Voodoo Child was going to be used in this episode. What a great moment when Lucy and the Master were tapping their feet to it.

This weeks cliffhanger was the best one so far in the modern series. We have so many unanswered questions. What are the Toclaphane? What's going to happen to the Doctor? What will happen to the Master? Questions I seriously cannot wait to find out the answers to! It was one of those episodes where I was literally gasping in anticipation just for the trailer for next week.

Favoutite Quote: Jack saying "You too huh?" to Martha.

Favourite moment: Erm apart from the whole episode, definitely when the Doctor was on the phone to the Master.

I give this episode (once again) 10/10.. :)

Barking mad, and I am referring to both the episode and the Master.  The Sound of Drums was a wild ride with RTD playing with the audience’s expectations as never before.  There was plenty to enjoy from Simm’s manically anti-Ten characterisation of the Master, to Martha finally getting to exert her independence and fight for her family.

RTD’s dialogue often sparkled.  The fabulous comment from the Doctor, “It’s like when you fancy someone and they don’t even know you exist”, coupled with Captain Jack’s aside, “You too”, was great fun.  There were fan pleasing moments such as the Master offering his wife a jelly baby and the “You’ve been watching too much tv” laugh out loud response to Martha’s assumption that the Master and the Doctor might be secret brothers.

The core of the episode was a wonderful exploration of the Doctor/Master relationship.  The idea that they chose their own names was “a psychiatrists dream”, as the Doctor points out.  Their individual responses to being forced to look into the vortex, was a fascinating explanation for their lifestyles.  Simm was excellent at showing how beneath the zany madness was a scared timelord who wanted the respect of his arch enemy, much like a child yearns for the respect of a parent.  DT totally made me understand how the Doctor feels responsible for the Master and both pities him and wants to save him, because he is all that is left of his race. His expression and eyes, during their telephone conversation, told a story all on their own.

That moment between the Doctor and the Master was beautifully played and was the highlight of the episode for me. Tense and even a little bit tender, it was mesmerising stuff, with menace laced perfectly with quirky humour – “Are you asking me out on a date!”   Unfortunately the tone of the rest of the episode fluctuated wildly and not always successfully.

I loved the scene where the Master rounds on the Cabinet and casually kills them all, but the part where the journalist was murdered and Simm repeatedly opens the door to hear the screams, felt misjudged, undercutting the tension at a crucial moment.  The worst offender was the pop music background to the ‘decimate’ scene as the toclafane arrive.  I wanted to be scared and shocked but the joke totally threw me out of the story.  Some of my problem with these scenes was the characterisation of the Master.  On the whole I thought John Simm was great but he occasionally went to OTT. Mostly I think the fault lay with the direction.  For example, at the beginning of the episode I had been fully expecting the resolution to the Doctor’s dilemma to be Jack’s vortex manipulator, but to start the episode with the result and then flashback to Utopia just sapped all the excitement.  There were several of these editing choices that prevented the tension really building as it had in Utopia.

This leads me onto my other complaint – the plot.  The set up did feel like a retread of last season’s finale.  The use of celebrity cameos, the newsreaders around the world sequence and the decent of the Toclafane through the rift mirroring the daleks’ arrival, all gave me a strong sense of déjà vu.  Hopefully the resolution will be so different and the threat will turn out to be more complex and my criticisms will turn out to have been misplaced.

However I don’t want to complain too much.  It was great entertainment.  I never looked at my watch.  Simm and DT had great chemistry and I really hope they get a great show down with each other next week.  A testimony to how good the episode was, by the end I felt our heroes desperation and have absolutely no idea how it will all be resolved.

The Sound of Drums is an exciting and amazing episode which
sees the meeting of the Doctor and the Master. Even though the Master took the TARDIS, the Doctor, Jack and Martha found a way back to the 21st century. When they arrive, they realize that the election is over, and Mr. Harold Saxon is the new prime minister of Great Britain. However, when he appears on the television, Martha recognizes his voice, as the voice of the newly regenerated Master! They all go back to Martha's house, and they use her laptop to find out more about Mr. Saxon. He seems tohave a whole life story, he went to Cambridge and got married, eventhought he had just been at the end of the universe, in the year 100 trillion. 18 months ago, he also set up a mobile phone connection, the Archangel network. While they are on his website, something pops up, saying that Mr. Saxon is giving a live broadcast on the television. When the Doctor, Martha and Jack tune in, they see Mr. Saxon saying that Earth is going to have an alliance with some strange sphere aliens, which he calls the Toclafane. While the Master is making this speech, the Doctorfinds a bomb on the back of Martha's television. Grabbing the laptop, the three of them escape from her house, just before it blows up. Martha rings her mum, to check if she is okay, and is told to come round to her house, and she has plans to get back together with Clive. When she passes the phone over to Clive, he tells her to beware Mr. Saxon and to run and hide. However, this call is being monitored by one of Saxon's accomplices and he is taken (by force) to jail. Martha runs to her car (with the Doctor and Jack following) and goes to her mother's house to see what's going on. However, the whole of her family is to be taken away, and when Martha drives towards the house, the police spot her and start shooting her car before she can do anything. Martha retreats, and then phones her brother to tell him not to contact anyone in their family, and to stay hidden. Mr. Saxon, however, is listening to the conversation and the Doctor takes the phone off Martha. The Doctor tells the Master about the Time War, and how everything died. The Master then reveals that he was revived by the Time Lords so that he could fight as a soldier in the war, but he ran away because he was too scared. When the Doctor asks him to stop being Prime Minister, and step down, he refuses.
The Master then tells the Doctor that he, Martha and Jack are
Britain's most wanted terrorists and they should run and hide. The Doctor must find a way to stop the Master, before he tries to take over the world...

This episode was very interesting and really enjoyable. The
acting (especially from the lead cast) was fabulous and the set was also very good. The script and plot was absolutely brilliant, and was really enjoyable. The Master was such a different character to usual Doctor Who villains, and I thought that he was absolutely brilliant. I loved it when he was watching the Teletubbies on the television and started wittering on about how wonderful it is to have a television in your tummy!
The Toclafane were quite strange and not as menacing as the Daleks for example, but I still thought that they were really good. The
cliff-hanger is in the right place as usual, as I really want to know what is going to happen next week! The music was absolutely amazing, and the brief appearance of 'Voodoo Child' was really unexpected!

The CGI again, was not very good which was really disappointing
as the Doctor's flashbacks of Gallifrey could have been really
interesting. The scene was also slightly cheesy, which probably could have been avoided.

My favourite quote was from the Master, when he said to the
Doctor, "Are you asking me to go on a date?" I was watching the episode with my friend as soon as he said it we both cracked up! It is something that the Doctor would never say, as he is definitely not as cheeky as the Master!

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode and I can't wait until
next weeks! My rating for this episode is 9/10.

The Doctor, Jack and Martha arrive on present day earth in hot pursuit of The Master who they quickly realise is the newly elected British Prime Minister Harold Saxon. Accompanied by his wife he appears to be a popular and trustworthy politician but in gassing his new cabinet members it soon becomes apparent that he is completely mad. He has been on earth for 18 months building his back story and using low level hypnotism through his mobile phone network to gain the trust of the whole country. The two Time Lords talk at first on the phone, the Master full of manic energy and witty one-liners and the Doctor for once very subdued. Saxon announces first contact with a race called the Toclafane will occur in the morning but the Doctor doubts this is their real name and creates a low level perception field for himself, Jack and Martha so they can get close to the Master without being noticed. They teleport to a UNIT spaceship above the earth where the first contact will be televised, Martha’s family are being held hostage and where they discover the Tardis has been turned into a paradox machine which is obviously not good news. The Master is a showman and after executing the American President live on TV he captures the Doctor and using his laser screwdriver and the Lazarus technology which he initiated ages the Doctor by 100 years leaving him completely helpless. As 6 billion Toclafane descend on the earth and start to remove 10% of the population, Martha manages to teleport off the ship and promises she will be coming back. She is the last hope.

Yet another fantastic episode packed full of action, superb acting especially by John Simm as the Master who brings enough of the Doctor’s usual traits to the role to make you believe all Time Lords must be witty and manic and like jelly babies. Not only has RTD brought together all the clues from this series he has managed to include enough references to the classic series to keep die hard fans very happy, including another brief glimpse of the legendary Gallifrey. Even the music has joined in with extracts from the UNIT theme, Torchwood and Martha’s tune being included.

Will 45 minutes be enough to resolve this helpless situation?

9/10.

They managed to get back to earth to follow the Master of the Time Lords but it was not an easy journey. The Tardis crew, consisting of the Doctor, Martha and Captain Jack Harkness escaped by the Doctor fixing Jacks burnt out old transporter. They travelled throughout time to follow him but there was no capsule to protect them. Very dangerous!! They quickly recover and find themselves in 21st Century England , exactly where they want to be. They walk around for a while and then start talking about who the Time Lord could be. They know that he is there because the Doctor can feel it. Martha also wonders who he could be because she recognised the voice from inside the Tardis. Jack tells her about the fact that he could have regenerated but she has no idea what this means because the Doctor has never told her! (Well, he tried to at one point but she didn’t want to listen because she didn’t want to think about him dying.) While he is doing this, there is a tapping on a cup in the background. The same tapping that the Professor heard in the last episode. A four beat tap! The Doctor hears this tapping and just looks blankly at him. He knows that that tapping is of some relevance but he is not sure what yet. He then comes out of his trance like state and tells Martha that he will know it’s him because Time Lords always do! Suddenly, it hits them! On a big screen in the middle of where they are stood, Mr. Saxon the new Prime Minister makes a speech. The Doctor steps forwards to take a closer look and they realise that the Master of the Time Lords has been voted Prime Minister!!!

‘This country had been sick. This country needs healing. This country needs medicine. In fact I’d go so far as to say that what this country really needs, right now…is a Doctor!!’ is Mr. Saxon’s first speech. When he says this, he looks directly at the camera. The Doctor knows that the speech is aimed directly at him!!

After the introductory music, Mr. Saxon goes into his office and gets handed a load of papers and folders on the way. He takes them all but does not even stop to look at any of them. He just carries on walking into the office. His wife talks to him as they go in. she says that she is really very proud of him and then the two of them kiss. As he is on his way in, Tish, Martha’s sister stops him and starts to talk to him about what her position is. All he says to her is that she should stand there and look gorgeous. He then goes into the office and starts talking to the people sat around him. Before getting down to serious business, he throws all of the papers across the table and tries to get everyone to laugh. He sees it as a funny moment but the government are not at all amused. He tries to cheer them up by putting on silly facial expressions but the men in the room do not even snigger. Eventually, one of them says that he is funny so that he will shut up. After this, he starts to thank the government. He says, ‘thank you. Thank you all. You ugly fat faced bunch of wet snivelling traitors! Again, the man in the corner says that he is funny but this time Mr. Saxon says that it was not a funny statement, it was true. He then goes on with the facial expressions again about funny and serious. To me, is serious face is funnier than the serious one. Slightly odd if you ask me. He tells them that they are all traitors because as soon as the votes were swinging in Mr. Saxon’s direction, the government joined Mr. Saxon’s party and abandoned the others. He doesn’t like this and decides to give them a reward. Gassing them!! He pulls out a gas mask to protect himself and then releases the gas into the air. The whole room fills up and then everyone in the room drops down dead. Mr. Saxon then just sits there tapping that tune out again. That’s all we see for now.

Elsewhere, Martha takes the Doctor and Jack back to her home. There, the Doctor asks for a laptop so that he can look for information on Harold Saxon. Martha gets one out and gives it to him. Jack takes hold of it and shows the Doctor the Saxon website. While looking for it, Jack tries to ring some friends but there is no answer. Could it have something to do with Mr. Saxon? Martha tries to start figuring bits of it out and realises that he became Prime Minister four days after she met the Doctor. They went travelling all around the universe while he was on planet Earth the whole time. Oops!! Martha wants more information but the Doctor only tells her that he is a Time Lord. He says that she does not need to know anything else. While they are searching this laptop at home, a woman goes into Mr. Saxon’s office. Tish tries to stop her but she does not listen. She barges in and demands to talk to Mrs Saxon. She agrees to this but only because she is promised the front page of the newspaper. She gets rid of Tish and completely changes. No talk of the font page. She just says that Mrs. Saxon, the country and the entire world are in danger!!! Mrs. Saxon says that she doesn’t want to talk about it but the woman insists. Mrs. Saxon says that she has no idea what she is talking about but there is without doubt something that she is hiding. The woman says that everything about Mr. Saxon is a lie. She says that he never used to exist. His childhood…all made up. His years at university…all made up. Everyone seems to believe his story though because Martha tells the Doctor and Jack about all of his past achievements. She honestly believes that he has a whole life. The Doctor says that this is impossible because he could have only arrived on Earth about 18 months before them, tops!!

Back at the office with Mrs Saxon, she is starting to get nervous. She wants the woman to leave but she just does not stop. She is one of the only people to see through Mr. Saxon’s plan. She says that 18 months ago (when he first landed) he became real. She says that is was his first ever honest appearance. At the same time as this, they launched the Archangel network. Also, as soon as the first official meeting, the government go into seclusion. What she doesn’t know is that it is not seclusion…they are all dead!! The woman then goes on to beg Mrs. Saxon to tell her about Mr. Saxon. She goes to talk about something and then stops herself because she made her choice. No matter what he is like, she belongs with him and will not do anything to hurt him. At this exact point, the camera direction changes and we see Mr. Saxon stood in he room behind them listening to what is going on. When she notices him, she goes back to her old reporter ways and tells Mr. Saxon that she is on her way out. Before going, he tells her that she was right and that Mr. Saxon does not really exist so she asks who he is. He then replies ‘I am the Master!!!’ he then lifts his hands up and orbs appear. They are no ordinary orbs…no, they are living creatures that can kill. This is precisely what they do to the woman!! They open up, and produce cutting equipment and while they kill, he talks again about the coming drumming. Mr and Mrs. Saxon then go outside so that they cannot hear the screams. Mr. Saxon then opens the door slightly and she is still screaming. He does this a few times over and then stops because Mrs Saxon walks away. He then tells her that everything end tomorrow. Just what exactly could he mean by that???

Meanwhile, back at Martha’s house, Martha and Jack say that they were both going to vote for Mr. Saxon. This was before Martha met the Doctor though so she had no idea what he was like. The Doctor then asks why she was going to vote and she says because she liked him. They did not know what he stood for but there was a reason that they were going to vote for him. He sounded good! Like you could trust hi. While Martha is saying this, she starts tapping out that four tap beat on the side of the sofa. The Doctor stops her talking and asks why she is tapping. She says that it is nothing, just a tapping noise with no meaning at all. Suddenly, something appears on the laptop screen saying that Mr. Saxon is broadcasting to all channels. The Doctor turns on the TV and listens to what Mr. Saxon has to say. He talks about the creatures of other planets. The Slitheen crashing into Big Ben, The Army of Ghosts all over the world, the Cybermen, and the Racnoss Empress in the Christmas Star. Mr. Saxon says that the government said nothing to the public about it but he wants to be different. He wants to introduce a new species into the World!! The little orbs that killed the woman earlier. He wants to bring dangerous creatures into the World!! They do not sound evil on the screen though, they sound sweet, like they want to make peace. What has Harold Saxon got up his sleeve? What are the Toclafane that he wants to introduce? Is Toclafane even a real species??

Mr. Saxon goes on to explain that they are going to be introduced to the world the following morning. He says that ‘tomorrow we take our place in the world. Every man, woman and child. Every teacher, and chemist, and lorry driver and farmer. I don’t know…every Medical Student!!’ Immediately, the Doctor then turns to look at Martha because of what she is…A Medical Student!! The Doctor then turns the TV around and finds a device attached to the back of it. A device set to explode any minute. They run out of the house just before it blows up!! The whole of the upstairs goes up in flames and it blows the three of them across the street. Martha then picks up her phone and then rings to see if her family are safe. She thinks that if Mr. Saxon knows about her, they might know about her family. Luckily, her mum picks up but there is a woman in the room with her. The same woman that has been with her throughout the series. Her mum tells her that she should go round because there is something that they need to talk about. She makes up that she is getting back together with Martha’s father but Martha is not convinced. Martha then speaks to her dad and asks him if anyone else is there. He tries not to tell her but then suddenly does! He gets up from his chair and goes to run out of the house! He also tells Martha to run and save herself too. Unfortunately, the people in the house grab him and pin him against the wall. He then gets dragged off and Martha puts the phone down and goes to try and help them. She gets in the car and the three of them go off to Martha’s parents’ house. The Doctor tells her not to but she does not listen. Her family are the most important thing to her…even if it does mean risking her own life and the Doctor’s and Jack’s!

The woman at the house with Mrs. Jones grabs hold of her too and throws her in a van with Mr. Jones. She rings Tish to tell her to be careful but she is too busy to listen to the conversation. They hang up and Martha arrives at her parent’s house just as they are being put into the van. She just sits there staring because she is so scared. Martha’s mum tells her to get out while she still can and so does the Doctor. She does not listen straight away but when the Doctor shouts it, she reverses as quickly as she can away from that area. The car gets shot a few times on the way but they still manage to escape…just!! After getting out of the car, Martha rings up Leo and checks that he is ok. He tells her that he is in Brighton and has been watching Mr. Saxon on TV. Martha is not interested in what he has to say, she only wants to tell him not to go home because it is not safe. She tells him not to phone any of the family, just to hide! What Martha does not know is that Mr. Saxon is listening into their conversation. Half way through, he interrupts and joins in with the conversation. He then adds in that he will find Martha and she can hide no where because he will always find her!! Martha then uses Mr. Saxon’s name so the Doctor can hear and he immediately takes the phone off of her so that he can talk to his old Time Lord friend. When the Doctor speaks, Mr. Saxon seems surprised. He picks up his phone and they have a proper conversation. Mr. Saxon calls the Doctor ‘Doctor’ and the Doctor calls Mr. Saxon ‘Master’. He says that he likes it when he is called that and the Doctor comes in with ‘you chose it’. Mr. Saxon then says that the Doctor chose his name because he wanted to be the man who could save everything. The man who makes everything better. That part of the conversation comes to an end and they start talking about him being the Prime Minister. The Doctor wants to know what the creatures are that he is introducing to the World. He says that the Toclafane is just a made up name and it doesn’t mean anything. Mr. Saxon then starts talking about Gallifrey. He asks where he can find it but the Doctor tells him that it is gone. He doesn’t seem to believe it though. He thinks that Gallifrey is still out there somewhere but the Doctor will not tell him where. He then tells him that the Time Lords all died in the Time War and Gallifrey burnt. Mr. Saxon says that he ran when the Dalek Emperor arrived because he was so scared. He made himself human so that they would never find him. He was terrified. The Doctor also says that he was the only one who could end it and he tried but he could not save the Time Lords or the Planet. Mr. Saxon then changed back to nasty again and asks him how he felt having killed all of those Daleks and destroying Gallifrey. The Doctor manages to stop him and tells him that the two of them can go off together and leave the planet. Mr. Saxon declines because it is too late. When the Doctor asks him what he means, he says that it’s the drumming. The sound of drums getting nearer and nearer. The Doctor says that he can help but he refuses. He then whispers down the phone ‘hear come the drums. Hear come the drums’ and suddenly a man in the street with the Doctor starts tapping his legs in the drumming tune. The Doctor demands to know about all of this but Mr. Saxon refuses to answer. While this is happening, we see the Doctor, Martha and Jack on TV as terrorists!! What has Mr. Saxon done and how can it be stopped?? Then, the Doctor turns around and sees that Mr. Saxon is watching them on camera. While he is doing this, he tells him to tell Jack that he cannot get hold of his friends because they were sent away to the Himalayas . The Doctor then destroys the camera so that Mr. Saxon cannot see them any more. Before hanging up, Mr. Saxon tells them to run. Run for their lives!

The Doctor then tells Martha and Jack that Mr. Saxon has control of everything and when they ask when they should do, he just says to run!!! After they have run, we go back to Mr. Saxon’s office. He is there with the orb creatures who are telling him that they must escape because the never ending darkness is coming! At 8oclock the next morning, his plan will come into action. Later on that evening, we see the Doctor, Martha and Jack sat out in the road. Martha has come back from getting food and the Doctor and Jack are still working on the laptop. The Doctor says that her whole family have been taken in except for Leo. He and Martha are the only ones safe…so far. They get talking about families and it brings up the evil Time Lord Master. They ask if he is related to the Doctor but he says that they were just friends along time ago. He gets talking about Gallifrey and how beautiful his home planet was. ‘The shining world of the solar system!!’ on his planet, there were beautiful suns and amazing people there. The children of Gallifrey. At the age of 8, Mr. Saxon, the Master, was taken away and saw all of eternity. He was taken for initiation. He stood in front of the untempered schism, a gap in the fabric of reality, through which he saw the whole of the Vortex. At 8 years old, he stared at the raw power of the vortex. Some would have been inspired, some would have run away…and some would go mad. Exactly what happened to the Master. The Doctor was one of the ones who ran away and never stopped!

Jack then says that since they are telling stories, it’s time that he told his. He opens up a window on the laptop and Torchwood appears. The Doctor is furious at this because of all the damage it did in the past. Jack tries to reassure him that it is a different Torchwood, created in the Doctor’s honour!! The Doctor opens the file and sees the woman who was questioning Mrs. Saxon on screen. She is there talking about Mr. Saxon! She tells them to look at the Archangel document because that is where it all started. When Harry Saxon became Minister in charge of launching the Archangel Network. The Doctor has no idea what it is but Martha says that she has it on her phone. She tells him that everyone has got it!! He looks at her phone and scans it with his Sonic Screwdriver. After doing this, he realises that Mr. Saxon is a hypnotist!! The phone then starts beeping in the 4 beat drumming pattern!! He is doing it to get people to people to vote for him and believe in him. It is a lot more powerful and a lot more discrete than mind control. A noise way down deep in the subconscious mind. That’s how he has power over everything!! That’s how he hid himself from the Doctor!! There is no way to stop it from down on Planet Earth but there is something that they can do now they know how he’s doing it. Straight away, the Doctor gets to work! He takes apart the laptop, takes the Tardis keys and fixes together some other parts that he has. Eventually, his creation is ready. 3 Tardis keys with pieces of the Tardis as part of them, doesn’t seem like anything special but they work brilliantly!! The Doctor tells Martha to look at him and she can see him perfectly clearly. But…when he puts the key around his neck, he goes out of focus. She knows that he is there but it is like she doesn’t want to know. It shifts the perception a tiny little bit but enough to stop Mr. Saxon noticing them. It doesn’t make them invisible, just unnoticed. ‘It’s like you fancy someone and they don’t even know you exist’!! The Doctor says. I think he’s trying to hint something to Martha there, don’t you? After he has said this and run off, Jack pops in with ‘you two, huh? And Martha just looks quite baffled.

As they are walking, the Doctor tells them that they must not draw attention to themselves or otherwise the spell is broken. They must keep to the shadows and stay unnoticed. They manage to walk through a crowd of people unnoticed and that’s all we see for now. Next, we see the news showing ‘countdown to contact’ for the new species that the Prime Minister wants to bring in. It says about the President from the United States arriving and then we go straight there. He tells Mr. Saxon that they will stand down and he will take control because the rules and protocols have just been ignored. UNIT will now be in charge of the new species arrival. To try and change the subject, Mr. Saxon introduces his wife but the President does not seem interested. He just says that he can be removed as Prime Minister if he is not very, very careful. Mr. Saxon then puts his finger to his lip and pretends to zip his mouth up. When the President starts talking about the ‘Toclafane’, Mr. Saxon unzips his mouth and carries on the conversation. Unfortunately, the whole thing will be televised!! Not very good for the Earth! After the President leaves, Mr. Saxon looks over to a corner of where they are and sees the Doctor, Martha and Jack there. They do not go out of focus though! Is this part of the camera shot or has the spell not worked on him?

Mr. Saxon goes to leave but stops when a police van shows up. The police van carrying Martha’s family!! Martha goes to move and save them but the Doctor stops her because of the perception filter. Jack says that he would love to walk up behind him and break Mr. Saxon’s neck but the Doctor says that it sounds like the old Torchwood. Because he is a Time Lord, the Doctor says that he is his responsibility. He is not here to kill him; he is here to save him! They realise that they need to get on board the ship and the only way to do it is to teleport on. Jack’s device works as a teleport so they all grab on and end up on the ship. The difference between this and a normal ship is that this one is protecting Earth from the sky…not across the sea. Mr. Saxon is already on board and he is there talking to people there in a sarcastic manner. After they walk away, Mr. Saxon tells his wife about the designing of the ship. Next, we go back to the Doctor, Martha and Jack, the Doctor suddenly stops and asks the others if they can hear anything. They say that they cannot hear it but Martha is not interested in what he can hear. She just wants to find her family. She wanders off in one direction but the Doctor starts to go another so she ends up following him. They run along a corridor and into a small room. And you’ll never believe what was in there!! The Tardis!!! They run over to it and go inside. Unfortunately, it has all been changed!! It’s all red in colour and he has cannibalised the Tardis!!! It’s a paradox machine!!

This is all we see here and then we go back to Mr. Saxon and the President. He is rushing around trying to make sure that everything goes smoothly but Mr. Saxon doesn’t seem too bothered. He is just sat there offering his wife jelly babies!! Back with the Tardis, the Doctor has to figure out how to save the Tardis before it’s too late. Martha and Jack are more concerned with stopping the Master taking over the universe but the Doctor does not seem too worried. He then blurts out, with ‘I have a way. Ooh, sorry, didn’t I mention it?’ then we go back to Mr. Saxon again and the President. He is stood there making a speech about introducing the new species and how lucky they are that a kind species wants to share the plant. What a silly man…if only he knew what was really going to happen. Mr. Saxon just sits there again and watches it all happen. Once the species arrive, they say that they want to talk only to Mr. Saxon. The Doctor, Martha and Jack walk into the room and the Doctor explains his plan. It is to get the key around Mr. Saxon’s neck so that he can o unnoticed while the Doctor saves the world. He says that it is hard to do though while the room is on Red Alert. When the new species ask to speak to Mr. Saxon, he stands up and goes over towards them. This means that the Doctor cannot get to Mr. Saxon any more. Uh-oh!! When he stands up to talk to the Toclafane creatures, the President tries to stop him. He says that he is not in charge of the operation and orders him to stand down. He refuses and tells the new species to kill him!! One of the creatures fly’s forwards and gets out its mechanical instruments that it used to kill the woman earlier. It then shoots a laser out at the President and he drops down to the floor. Dead. After this happens, Mr. Saxon’s guards get their guns out of their pockets and go to shoot the people in the room. Martha and Jack cling onto each other tightly in the corner and try to keep out of the way. Mr. Saxon laughs hysterically and makes an announcement on the TV. ‘Peoples of the earth, please attend carefully!’

As he says this, the Doctor takes the key off from around his neck and jumps forwards to try and stop Mr. Saxon. The guards grab him and Mr. Saxon is glad that he was there to witness the Earth’s destruction. He also talks about the perception filter. He says that it does not work on him! It did not work when they were in the car park and it isn’t working now because he can see Martha and Jack in the corner. Jack then runs forwards to try and stop him but Mr. Saxon kills him with his laser screwdriver!! He also knows about the immortality because he says ‘and the good thing is, he’s not dead for long. I get to kill him again!!’ The Doctor tells him to think about what he is doing and tells him to rethink it. He decides not to listen to him and walks down the stairs towards him. The guards let him go and he falls to the floor at the Master’s feet. The Doctor offers to help him with the sound in his head but again, he refuses to listen. Mr. Saxon wants to shut him up so he takes a trip down Memory Lane . He talks about the genetic manipulation device of Professor Lazarus’s. He says that the only reason Tish got a job there was because he was laying traps for the Doctor. After this, he says that he wants to harm the Doctor seriously so he mentions that all of that energy from the machine has been transferred into his screwdriver. Because he has his hand, he has his biological code so he can use it to age the Doctor. 100 years!! While this is happening, Jack wakes up and tries to get Martha to leave. She refuses and before they get time to talk anymore, the Doctor has been transformed and their conversation stops. Martha rushes over to him to see if he is ok but she goes to leave because her family have been brought in. he stands up and looks at them carefully and then goes back to the Doctor. The Doctor then asks Mr. Saxon if he will tell him what the Toclafane really are but he says that his hearts would break if he knew the truth! Their conversation stops here because the creatures ask if their machine is ready. Mr. Saxon tells them that all is ready to happen and then stands up to talk into the TV again. This time though, he says: ‘Umm…Well, basically. End of the world!!’ He then holds up his laser screwdriver, shouts ‘here come the drums’ and the orb creatures otherwise known as the Toclafane, descend upon the Earth!! As this is happening, music begins to play saying ‘here come the drums here come the drums!!’ the Tardis starts smoking and a great hole rips open from the sky. This is where the Toclafane come from. 6 billion Toclafane descending upon the Earth ready to cause total destruction!! As they reach the Earth, they start shooting their lasers at the people down there. Mr. Saxon then tells the creatures to remove one tenth of the population!! At this point, one tenth of the population get killed!! While this is happening, the Doctor lets go of a sobbing Martha and looks at her as if she should know what to do next. She takes hold of Jack’s teleportation device and transports herself out. She lands in the middle of the city and says to herself that after she has stopped everything, she is going back for the Doctor!! After this, we go back to Mr Saxon and the Doctor. He and his wife have hold of him and Mr. Saxon is talking about his new dominion and how good he thinks it is!! That’s it until next week. Will Martha Jones save the day? Or will the Doctor fall at the hands of his Master? The Final Part Continues next week!!

Episode Rating: Well, its hard how to sum up this episode because I really enjoyed it. The story line was fantastic, the acting was brilliant but I thought it was too over the top!! The music was unnecessarily loud and the way that the Doctor was aged was slightly pathetic. You are supposed to despise Mr. Saxon because of his plan to take over the world but you can’t help loving him because he is so funny. The Doctor does not think of Martha enough and continually shouts at her. This episode would have got an eight or a nine for excitement and emotion but it goes down to a six because of how irrelevant some of it seemed. Let’s hope the finale can beat this dreadful score. The lowest I have given any episode. Overall rating: 6/10

“The Master” is posing as Harold Saxon the Prime minister, he is an evil Time Lord so now it is up to the Doctor to try and save him.  Good Time Lord v bad Time Lord.  In this episode we are given a few flash backs and an explanation into how the Master became evil for those who do not, or are not old enough to remember him from the old series.  He has left the Doctor, Martha and Captain Jack, stranded at the end of the universe and he has returned to Earth in the TARDIS and is plotting an invasion of aliens called the Toclafarne. The Toclafarne are floating sphere shaped creatures and they are waiting in the wings to take over the world with the Master in charge.

The Doctor manages to fix Captain Jacks vortex tracker thing on his wrist and they are able to teleport themselves back to Earth. Martha discovers that all her family except her brother who is in Brighton, have been taken prisoner and she, The Doctor and Jack just manage to escape from her flat before it is blown up.  They have to hide, so the Doctor makes TARDIS keys, which they wear round their necks and this semi hides them from view, the Master however knows that they are there.  He seems to be one step ahead of the Doctor all the time.  They eventually find the TARDIS only to discover that it has been turned into a Paradox machine; it’s not explained what that is, the Doctor and Jack know but unfortunately the Doctor can’t fix it.

At the end the master turns the Doctor into a very old man and it is left to Martha to teleport herself away and try to save the day.  We will find out what happens next week.  This episode was very exciting and as usual D.T.’s acting was excellent, the shocked look on his face when he saw the Master, the way he pleaded with him when they talked about Gallifrey and of course he didn’t want to kill him he wanted to help him.  John Simm plays the evil Time Lord wonderfully, funny at times but also quite sinister.  Martha was left out in the cold a bit here, but she will make up for it next week I’msure, she will be back to help her family, the Doctor and Jack.  Wonderful writing from R.T.D.
Marks: very exciting 9/10.
